Chapter 1: Welcome to Candle Making

1.1 Why Make Your Own Candles

Candle making is one of the most rewarding crafts to pick up at home. The equipment list is short, the learning curve is gentle, and within an afternoon you can go from a bag of wax pellets to a finished, fragranced candle sitting on your windowsill. It is also a craft you can scale to suit you: a single small batch for yourself, a stack of gifts for Christmas, or the beginning of a small business selling at craft fairs and online.

Beyond the finished product, there is something genuinely calming about the process itself. Melting wax, watching it clear, stirring in fragrance, and pouring a smooth, glassy surface is a slow, hands-on task that rewards patience far more than it punishes mistakes. Almost every problem you will encounter as a beginner is fixable, and most of them simply make you better at the next pour.

Tip: Start small. A first batch of two or three candles teaches you far more than one huge batch, and mistakes are cheaper to make in small quantities.

1.2 How to Use This Guide

This guide is built to be read once in full and then dipped into as a reference. Chapters 1 to 5 cover the background you need before you melt any wax: safety, wax types, wicks, containers, and tools. Chapter 6 walks through your first candle step by step. Chapter 7 is a dedicated chapter on adding scent, since this is the part beginners ask about most. Chapters 8 and 9 take you beyond the basics and help you fix anything that goes wrong, and Chapter 10 plus the appendix give you quick reference material to come back to.

If you only read one chapter before your first pour, make it Chapter 2. Hot wax and naked flame are both involved in this hobby, and a few minutes of safety reading now will save you a great deal of trouble later.

1.3 The Main Candle Types

Almost everything in candle making is a variation on a handful of core formats. Knowing the difference helps you choose the right starting project.

Container Candles

Wax poured directly into a jar, tin, or other heatproof vessel. This is the easiest and most forgiving format for beginners, and the one this guide focuses on for your first project, since the container supports the wax as it sets and there is no need to remove anything from a mould.

Pillar Candles

Free-standing candles poured into a mould and removed once set. They look impressive but need a harder wax blend and a release agent, so they suit a slightly more experienced maker. Covered in Chapter 8.

Votives and Tealights

Small candles, usually burned inside a separate holder or metal cup. Quick to make and a good way to use up leftover wax. Also covered in Chapter 8.

Speciality Formats

Layered candles, multi-wick candles, shaped or carved candles, and gel candles all build on the same fundamentals once you have the basics down.

Chapter 2: Safety First

2.1 Working With Hot Wax

Wax itself is not especially dangerous at the temperatures used for candle making, but it is hot enough to cause a serious burn, and it behaves unpredictably if it is overheated or comes into contact with water or an open flame.

Never heat wax directly over an open flame or hob ring. Always use a double boiler (a heatproof jug or pan sitting in a larger pan of simmering water). Direct heat can scorch the wax, discolour it, or in the worst case ignite it.

⚠ WARNING

Never pour water onto a wax fire. Like a chip-pan fire, this causes the burning wax to splash and spread rather than putting it out. Smother the flame with a metal lid or fire blanket and turn off the heat source.

Most waxes used at home are melted somewhere in the range of 60 to 85°C, well below the flash point of the wax itself, but you should still treat melted wax with the same respect as hot cooking oil. Use a thermometer rather than guessing, keep handles turned away from the edge of the hob, and never leave melting wax unattended.

Tip: Keep a lid that fits your melting pot within arm's reach the whole time you are working. If wax ever does catch, you want to be able to smother it in one movement, not go searching for something suitable.

2.2 Setting Up Your Workspace

A good workspace makes the whole process smoother and safer.

  • Choose a flat, stable, heatproof surface, ideally a kitchen worktop rather than a wobbly table.
  • Cover the work area with old newspaper, baking paper, or a silicone mat. Spilled wax is far easier to peel off paper than to scrape off a worktop.
  • Keep the area well ventilated, especially once you start working with fragrance oils.
  • Keep pets and small children out of the room while you are pouring.
  • Have oven gloves, a damp cloth, and kitchen roll within reach before you start, not after you need them.

2.3 Fire Safety Basics

Once your candles are finished, the safety considerations shift from hot wax to naked flame.

  • Always burn candles on a heatproof, level surface, away from curtains, paper, and anything else flammable.
  • Trim the wick to around 5 to 7 mm before every burn. A long wick causes a tall, flickering flame and excess soot.
  • Never leave a burning candle unattended, and keep candles out of draughts, which cause uneven burning and flaring.
  • If you make and sell candles, check current UK guidance on candle labelling and safety warnings, since this is a legal requirement for items offered for sale.
Tip: A simple wick trimmer or a clean pair of nail scissors kept just for this job makes trimming far easier than trying to pinch the wick off with your fingers.

Chapter 3: Choosing Your Wax

Wax is the single biggest decision you will make as a beginner, since it affects how your candle pours, sets, scents, and burns. There is no single "best" wax; each type has a different personality.

3.1 Soy Wax

Made from soybean oil, soy wax is the most popular choice for home candle makers and a sensible starting point. It is widely available, melts at a relatively low temperature, holds fragrance well, and produces a clean, soot-light burn in a container candle.

Container soy waxes typically melt around 50 to 55°C and are poured somewhere between 55 and 65°C, though this varies by brand, so always check the supplier's data sheet.

Tip: Soy wax is prone to a frosty white surface texture called frosting. It is harmless and does not affect performance, but if you want a perfectly clear surface, pour at the warmer end of the recommended range and avoid temperature shocks while cooling.

3.2 Paraffin Wax

A petroleum byproduct and the traditional candle wax. Paraffin gives a strong hot throw (how much scent fills the room once lit), takes dye colour vividly, and is the standard choice for pillar and votive candles because it releases cleanly from moulds. It burns slightly hotter and can produce more soot than soy if the wick is oversized.

3.3 Beeswax

A natural wax with a lovely warm honey scent of its own, a hard set, and a long, clean burn. Pure beeswax candles tend to have a weaker cold throw, meaning the unlit fragrance is subtle, and beeswax accepts added fragrance less readily than soy or paraffin. It is also the most expensive of the common waxes.

3.4 Coconut Wax & Blends

Coconut wax is soft, burns cleanly, and has excellent scent throw, but on its own it is usually too soft for a container candle, so it is normally blended with soy or another harder wax. Many suppliers sell ready-made coconut-soy or coconut-apricot blends specifically for container candles, which is a good route for beginners who want strong scent throw without formulating a blend themselves.

Chapter 4: Wicks

4.1 Wick Types

The wick controls the size and heat of the flame, and therefore how well your candle burns, how big the melt pool gets, and how much fragrance is released as it burns.

  • Cotton wicks (braided): The most common all-purpose wick, available in many thicknesses to suit different wax and container sizes.
  • Wood wicks: Flat wooden strips that give a gentle crackle as they burn. Popular for a rustic look, but more fussy to light and keep alight.
  • Wooden-core or paper-core wicks: A cotton or paper wick with a thin wood or paper strip inside to keep it upright in soft wax.
  • Pre-tabbed wicks: Wicks already fixed to a metal base, which makes positioning in a container far easier for beginners.
Tip: Buy pre-tabbed wicks for your first few batches. Gluing or melting a wick onto a separate tab is an extra fiddly step you do not need while you are still learning everything else.

4.2 Sizing Your Wick

Wick size is the most common source of frustration for beginners, because the right size depends on the wax, the fragrance load, the dye, and the diameter of your container, not just the container size alone. Suppliers publish wick guides for their specific wax and wick ranges, and these should always be your starting point rather than a generic chart.

The goal is a melt pool that reaches the edges of the container within roughly two to four hours of burning, without the flame growing too tall, sooty, or leaning. This is exactly what test burns are for.

4.3 Test Burns

Never assume a wick is correct just because a chart says so. Always burn a test candle made with your exact wax, fragrance, dye, and container before committing to a wick size for a full batch.

  1. Burn the test candle for three to four hours, or until the melt pool reaches the edge of the container, whichever is sooner.
  2. Let it cool completely, then repeat for several burn cycles over a few days.
  3. Watch for tunnelling, mushrooming, sooting, or excessive flame height, and adjust wick size accordingly.
Tip: Keep a simple notebook or spreadsheet of every test, recording wax, wick, fragrance load, and pour temperature. It feels like extra admin at first, but it saves an enormous amount of guesswork on your next batch.

Chapter 5: Containers, Colour & Tools

5.1 Choosing Containers

For your first candles, choose heatproof glass jars or tins designed for candle making. Repurposed jam jars and tumblers can work, but check they are free of stress cracks and rated for heat, since ordinary glass can crack from thermal shock.

Never use thin or decorative glass, plastic, or anything not explicitly rated for candle use. A container that cracks while holding hot wax is a serious fire and burn risk.

5.2 Adding Colour

Colour is entirely optional for your first candle, and many beginners choose to skip it so they can focus on wax, wick, and scent. If you do want colour, use dye specifically made for candles, either liquid dye, dye chips, or dye blocks. Ordinary food colouring or craft dye is water based and will not mix into wax.

Tip: Add colour a little at a time and judge it once it has cooled, not while it is still liquid. Melted wax always looks darker and more saturated than the set candle will be.

5.3 Essential Equipment

  • A pouring pot or double boiler setup: a heatproof jug that sits inside a pan of simmering water.
  • A candle or sugar thermometer: guesswork on temperature is the single biggest cause of failed pours.
  • Digital kitchen scales: wax and fragrance are measured by weight, not volume.
  • Wick centring tools or even two clothes pegs and a pencil: to hold the wick upright and centred while the wax sets.
  • A heatproof spatula or stirring stick: kept only for candle making, not shared with food.
  • Containers and pre-tabbed wicks: sized for your first project.

5.4 Nice to Have Extras

  • A heat gun, for smoothing the top of a cooled candle if it sets with dips or bubbles.
  • A wick trimmer, for neat trims once the candle is finished.
  • Pouring jugs with a narrow spout, for cleaner pours with less dribbling.
  • A second thermometer as a spare, since dropping one mid-pour is a common beginner mishap.

Chapter 6: Step by Step Container Candle

This chapter walks through a single soy container candle from start to finish. It assumes a 200 g jar as the example, but the method scales to any size as long as you keep your wax-to-fragrance ratios consistent.

6.1 Prepare and Measure

  1. Set up your workspace as described in 2.2, with everything you need within reach.
  2. Weigh your empty jar, then fill it with water and weigh again to find the water weight. As a rough rule of thumb, wax weight is around 90 percent of water weight for soy wax, which gives you a starting point for how much wax to melt.
  3. Stick the wick tab to the centre of the base of the jar using a dab of melted wax or a wick sticker, then use a centring tool, or two pegs resting across the rim with the wick pencil between them, to hold it upright and centred.

6.2 Melt the Wax

  1. Weigh out your wax flakes or pellets into your pouring pot.
  2. Set the pot inside a pan of gently simmering water and melt the wax slowly, stirring occasionally.
  3. Heat to the supplier's recommended fragrance-adding temperature, usually somewhere around 75 to 85°C for soy wax, then remove from the heat.
Tip: Resist the urge to rush the melt by cranking up the heat. Wax that is overheated can discolour, lose some of its scent-holding ability, and take far longer to cool back down to pouring temperature than it took to overheat in the first place.

6.3 Pour and Cool

  1. Once fragrance has been stirred in (see Chapter 7) and the wax has cooled to the recommended pour temperature, usually around 55 to 65°C for soy, pour slowly and steadily into the centre of the jar.
  2. Leave a small amount of wax behind in the pot for a second "top-up" pour, since soy wax often forms a slight dip or crater as it sets.
  3. Let the candle cool undisturbed at room temperature, away from draughts and direct sunlight.
  4. Once a skin has formed but before it is fully solid, reheat the reserved wax and pour a thin top-up layer to smooth the surface, if needed.
⚠ WARNING

Never put a cooling candle in the fridge or somewhere cold to speed things up. Rapid cooling causes cracking, sinkholes, and poor adhesion between the wax and the glass.

6.4 Curing

Curing is the resting period after a candle sets where the wax and fragrance fully bond. For soy wax this is typically one to two weeks; other waxes vary, so check your specific wax's guidance.

  • Store curing candles somewhere cool, dark, and away from draughts, with the lid loosely on if the jar has one.
  • Do not test burn until the cure time has passed; an under-cured candle will give a misleadingly weak scent throw.
  • Trim the wick to around 5 to 7 mm before the first burn.
Tip: Curing feels like the hardest step because nothing seems to be happening, but it is genuinely one of the biggest levers you have over scent throw. Resist the temptation to light it early.

Chapter 7: Adding Scent

Scent is what turns a plain block of wax into a candle people actually want in their home, and it is also where beginners most often go wrong, usually by adding too much or too little, or at the wrong temperature. This chapter covers the whole process in one place.

7.1 Fragrance Oils vs Essential Oils

Fragrance Oils

Fragrance oils are synthetic or part-synthetic blends formulated specifically for candle making. They are the standard choice for most candle makers because they are designed and tested to be stable at candle-making temperatures, to bind well with wax, and to give a strong, consistent cold and hot throw. Reputable suppliers provide a full ingredients list and a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for each fragrance.

Essential Oils

Essential oils are natural plant extracts. They appeal to makers who want a fully natural product, but they generally give a much weaker scent throw than fragrance oils, many have low flash points which limit how much can safely be used, and they are usually more expensive per usable batch. They work, but expect a subtler result.

Tip: If you are new to scenting candles, start with one or two fragrance oils specifically labelled for candle use, rather than essential oils, simply because the results are more predictable while you are still learning the basics.

7.2 Fragrance Load: How Much to Use

Fragrance load is the percentage of fragrance oil by weight, relative to the weight of the wax. It is always calculated by weight, not by drops or volume.

For example, a 6 percent fragrance load in 300 g of wax means 300 x 0.06, which is 18 g of fragrance oil.

Always check the maximum usage rate on the fragrance supplier's own data sheet rather than relying on a generic figure. Going over the recommended load can cause poor burning, weeping fragrance pools on the surface, and in rare cases an unsafe flame.

7.3 When to Add Scent

Adding fragrance at the right temperature matters as much as the amount used.

  1. Melt the wax to its full melting point, then continue heating slightly above this to the fragrance oil supplier's recommended addition temperature, commonly around 75 to 85°C for soy and similar waxes.
  2. Remove the pot from the heat before adding fragrance oil, to avoid scorching the scent off.
  3. Stir gently but thoroughly for a full one to two minutes, scraping the sides and base of the pot, since fragrance that is not fully mixed in will separate out later.
  4. Allow the wax to cool to its recommended pour temperature before pouring.
Tip: Adding fragrance too early, while the wax is still well above the addition temperature, is one of the most common reasons a finished candle smells far weaker once lit than the fragrance oil did in the bottle. Heat evaporates the more volatile scent notes first.

7.4 Hot Throw and Cold Throw

Candle makers describe scent in two ways. Cold throw is how strongly a candle smells when it is unlit, which matters for retail display and gifting. Hot throw is how strongly it fills a room once lit and burning, which is what actually matters to the person using the candle.

A candle can have a strong cold throw and a disappointing hot throw, or the other way round. Hot throw is influenced by wick size, fragrance load, cure time, and the wax itself, so if hot throw is weak after a full cure, look first at whether the wick is large enough to create a proper melt pool, since fragrance is released from the liquid wax, not the solid sides.

7.5 Scent Safety

Fragrance oils are chemical products, even when naturally derived, and deserve a little caution.

  • Always check the flash point of a fragrance oil before use; it should be safely above the temperature at which you intend to add it to wax.
  • Work in a well-ventilated room when handling concentrated fragrance oils.
  • Keep fragrance oils away from skin and eyes, and store them out of reach of children and pets.
  • Never exceed the supplier's stated maximum usage rate, even if you personally prefer a stronger scent. A higher concentration does not always mean a stronger hot throw, and it can affect how safely the candle burns.

Chapter 8: Other Candle Types

8.1 Pillar Candles

Pillar candles are poured into a rigid mould and removed once fully set, so they need a harder wax (a dedicated pillar wax blend rather than a soft container soy) and usually a release spray or a small amount of release agent worked into the mould beforehand. Cooling is slower and more controlled than a container pour, since shrinking too fast can crack the candle as it pulls away from the mould.

Tip: Pillar wax often needs a second, smaller top-up pour once the centre sinks as it cools, similar to a container candle but usually more pronounced, so keep extra wax in reserve.

8.2 Votives & Tealights

Votives are small, free-standing candles burned inside a separate holder, while tealights are poured directly into a thin metal cup. Both are a great way to use up small amounts of leftover wax from a bigger batch, and they cure and test much faster than a full-size container candle because there is so little wax involved.

8.3 Layered & Multi-Wick Candles

Layered candles are built up in stages, pouring one colour or scent, letting it set partially, then pouring the next layer on top. Multi-wick candles use two or three wicks in a single large container to create a wide enough melt pool that a single wick could not manage on its own. Both build directly on the skills from Chapter 6, so they are a natural next project once your first few single-wick candles are working well.

Chapter 9: Troubleshooting

9.1 Common Problems and Fixes

White, frosty patches on the surface or sides of a soy candle
Cause Natural crystallisation of soy wax as it cools, known as frosting. Harmless.
Fix Pour at a slightly warmer temperature and avoid sudden temperature changes while cooling. Some frosting is normal and not a defect.
A hole or dip forms in the wax as it cools
Cause Sinkholes, caused by wax shrinking as it cools, especially common with soy wax.
Fix Use a heat gun or skewer to poke small holes down to the bottom, then reheat reserved wax and pour a thin top-up layer to fill it.
Patches where the wax has pulled away from the glass, looking cloudy or detached
Cause Wet spots, caused by the wax contracting away from the container as it cools, often made worse by cooling too quickly or in a draught or cold room.
Fix Pour at the recommended temperature, preheat the container slightly if your room is cold, and let the candle cool slowly at room temperature away from draughts.
The candle burns down the middle leaving a thick ring of unmelted wax around the edge
Cause Tunnelling, almost always caused by an undersized wick, or by not burning the very first burn long enough to establish a full melt pool.
Fix Size up the wick on the next batch, and always let the first burn run until the melt pool reaches the edges of the container.
A bulb of carbon builds up on the tip of the wick
Cause Mushrooming, usually caused by an oversized wick, too much fragrance oil, or a draught disturbing the flame.
Fix Trim the wick before every burn, size down the wick on the next batch, and check the fragrance load against the supplier's maximum.
Black soot marks appear on the inside of the jar
Cause An oversized wick, a draughty burning spot, or a wick that has not been trimmed and has started to lean or curl.
Fix Trim the wick, move the candle away from draughts, and size down the wick if the problem continues across several burns.
The finished candle barely smells, even unlit
Cause Fragrance added at too high a temperature, an under-strength fragrance load, or testing before the cure time has finished.
Fix Add fragrance at the recommended temperature and stir thoroughly, check the load against the wax weight, and wait the full recommended cure time before testing.
Cracks appear in a pillar candle after unmoulding
Cause Cooling too quickly, often from being moved to a cold room or draught straight after pouring.
Fix Let pillar candles cool slowly at a steady room temperature, and avoid moving the mould until it is fully set.

Chapter 10: Glossary

Cold Throw
How strongly a candle smells while unlit.
Hot Throw
How strongly a candle smells once lit and burning, generally the more important measure for everyday use.
Flash Point
The temperature at which a fragrance oil's vapours can ignite. Should always be safely above the temperature used when adding it to wax.
Fragrance Load
The weight of fragrance oil used, expressed as a percentage of the wax weight.
Frosting
A harmless white, crystalline texture that can appear on the surface or sides of soy wax candles as they cool.
Sinkhole
A dip or hollow that forms in the wax surface as it cools and shrinks, fixed with a small top-up pour.
Tunnelling
When a candle burns straight down the middle, leaving unmelted wax around the edge, usually caused by an undersized wick.
Mushrooming
A build-up of carbon on the wick tip, usually caused by an oversized wick or too much fragrance oil.
Wet Spots
Patches where set wax has pulled away from the inside of the container, giving a cloudy, detached appearance.
Pour Temperature
The temperature at which melted wax is poured into the container or mould, specific to each wax type.
Cure Time
The resting period after a candle sets, during which the wax and fragrance fully bind together, improving scent throw.
Melt Pool
The pool of liquid wax that forms around the wick as a candle burns. Fragrance is released mainly from this liquid pool.
Double Boiler
A method of indirect heating: a heatproof jug or pot of wax set inside a larger pan of simmering water, used to avoid scorching wax over direct heat.
